This can take a place next to recently published similar books, Eats Shoots and Leaves by Truss, and Ruth Heller's older standbys. Illustrations are child friendly, along the lines of Giselle Potter's work. For a first effort this text and the illustrations have a lot going for them. Short verses do the explanation and show how marks are used. Classroom teachers in lower grades-four would be pushing the limits-will love the rhyme and vocabulary choices. Illustrations show the use of the marks as the text explains them. Not only does the period end sentences, it is needed for abbreviations, while the comma sets off items in a list, separates the day and the year, and city and state. Each page shows a mark and how it is used. A book review from Children's Literature says, "Where would we all be without the periods, commas, exclamation and questions marks that show readers what their voices should do, or where to end a sentence or phrase? Those marks and others march across the title page alerting readers to get ready for a Field Day, with punctuation marks playing key roles. ![]() ![]() When students identify the theme of a story, it’s important to make it count. There’s so much more we can do with theme, though! I have blogged extensively about teaching theme and comparing the theme to the main idea of a story, which you can view HERE. ![]() #3 Analyze the Theme, Topic, and Central Idea The cards in this bundle cover character traits using both text and pictures, character feelings, inferring character traits, how and why characters change over time, and character conflict. To really help your students go deeper with character study, this Character Study Task Card Bundle has 140 differentiated character study task cards. What conflicts (aside from the main conflict) arise that give you a glimpse into the character’s traits?.How did the main character’s traits, actions, and motivations impact the way they solved the main problem in the story?.Imagine what parts of the main characters’ lives are left out of the story. How would the story be different if it were told from a different character’s point of view?.What is the general mood of the main characters?.Analyze the differences in the actions between the protagonist and the antagonist. They can also see what motivates the antagonist and may even see the protagonist isn’t always a good person. When your students get to know the characters better, they have a more critical eye for the antagonist and the protagonist as well as their motivations. Then you help them analyze the text even deeper by having them draw out and analyze important quotes for their character. This post has more examples for studying characters or this post has a free character project that works with any novel. Using graphic organizers or reading journals, you can have your students talk about the characters’ motivations, goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Talk about WHO characters are by assigning each group a specific character to follow and analyze their actions. Talking about characters being static and dynamic is one thing, but every character has a past, a present, and a future that drives them in one way or another. About how much time passes from the beginning to the end of the story?. ![]() Why do you think the author chose this particular setting?.How would the story be different if the setting were changed?.How does the setting impact the way the story is told?. ![]() I do this for both fictional and informational books.įurther, I LOVE doing a sort of positive and negative words to describe a setting. I almost ALWAYS print out relevant pictures for students to study before we begin a novel… this helps them learn (and infer) so much about the setting, the characters, etc. This is a great time for your students to dive deeper into a setting other than one they are familiar with and incorporate the study of other cultures into your classroom. Help your students think critically about the setting of the text by talking about what it’s like to live there, what makes it unique, and ultimately, how the time period (or time of year) impacts the story and how it’s told. 2020 South Dakota or even 1910 New York, you’re talking about two very different worlds! The differences in setting - both time and place - are a critical part of analyzing stories. If you tell me a story based in 2020 New York vs. We all know talking about the setting of a text is important. Here are four ways to bring your reading to the next level and encourage students to think critically about elements of the text. ![]() ![]() ![]() To animate straight just click on the next cel and draw in it. You also have the option to keep the background image on at all times. You can control how many you want on the stack and the bottom ones are automatically removed when there are too many. When you open an image it goes on top of the stack, just like on a traditional animation disc. It works automatically to let you see exactly the images you want ghosted behind the one you’re working on. Light BoxįlipBook’s Light Box is uniquely powerful yet very simple. Touch and hold on any cel to get a popup menu to let you Cut, Copy and Paste or Stop a Hold. To unhide your levels just click on the Show all levels command.Ĭlick on a frame number to display that frame as if you has paused the video playback on it.ĭrag and Drop works on any cel that has an image in it. In addition to adding levels you can also rename each level, step through the levels or lock and hide levels as well. The stepper control lets you add levels and although you cannot delete levels, you can limit the number of levels that appear in the Xsheet. To add levels touch and hold the level header to bring up the level dialog. To Insert, Add or Delete frames click on the >, +, – icons at the bottom of the Xsheet or you can touch and hold any frame number to pop up a menu with the relevant options. To Stop the Hold touch and hold any empty cel and select Stop Hold from the popup menu. Images in one frame will automatically hold through the following frames until they are replaced by another image or you Stop the Hold. So every row is a frame, every column is a level and each level has two layers, ink (the pencil lines) and paint. It’s vertical because that’s the way professional animators are used to working. The tools bars at the top and bottom of the window give you everything you need to produce broadest quality animation. You can pan, zoom and rotate the image to make easier to work on. It’s just like a media player with a few extra options for editing. The main window is where you will draw, paint and play your animation. This User’s Guide is really short because FlipBook is so easy to use. The major studios and top animation schools use FlipBook because it works the way animators want to work and it’s easy to use so it doesn’t get in the way of your creativity. FlipBook is made for people who love to draw and want to do traditional 2D animation. ![]() ![]() It has increased even as some religious leaders, including Pope Francis and Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, a leading authority in Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, have made clear that vaccines are necessary for the common good and take precedence over religious beliefs. ![]() Williams, from the University of Colorado, noted that despite a decrease in religiosity among Americans, there has been an increase in religious exemption requests for vaccination, implying that these exemptions are "no longer serving their original purpose." ![]() More religious exemptions despite decreasing religiousness The remaining six states - California, Connecticut, Maine, Mississippi, New York and West Virginia - only offer medical exemptions. Here's what to know about the debate over non-medical exemptions: On the rise in schoolsĭata from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that while requests for medical exemptions in schools remain low and fairly constant (around 0.3%), non-medical exemptions (including religious and personal belief exemptions) have risen from 1.4% in the 2011-'12 school year to 2.2% in the 2019-'20 school year (a 57% increase).įorty-four states and the District of Columbia currently offer religious exemptions to vaccines, of which 15 offer broader personal belief exemptions for personal, moral or spiritual ideologies. In addition to California announcing that it is adopting a state-wide mandate, individual education boards in cities like Los Angeles have started adding the Pfizer vaccine, which was granted full FDA approval in September and is currently the only vaccine approved for children older than 12, to their list of immunization requirements.Įxperts say other school districts are likely to follow suit and have strong legal ground to enforce the requirement set forth in the 1944 Supreme Court case Prince v. Non-medical exemptions from immunizations within schools In school settings, where vaccines have long been recognized as crucial to preventing communicable diseases, state-level mandates are common and have been tested in the courts. As such, some states have tried to do away with non-medical exemptions overall for their employees. This leaves employers in the difficult and legally precarious position of determining whether the requests are valid. While there is no overall data yet on exemptions for COVID-19 vaccines, a number of companies and state governments have seen interest in religious exemptions - a protection stemming from the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The vaccination effort has raised new questions about exemptions because mandates for adults are generally rare outside of settings like healthcare facilities and the military, and the inoculations are relatively new. ![]() NEW YORK - With COVID-19 vaccine mandates proliferating across the country in the public and private sectors as well as some school districts, the pushback from those unwilling or hesitant to get their shots is heating up. ![]() |
